When I put together the 1994 Orioles Cookbook, Cal Ripken put in this family recipe. We adopted it as our own! They are made for an ironman but anyone can eat them. Yummy!

Ingredients:

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 t ground cloves
granulated sugar for rolling

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl cream shortening, brown sugar, molasses and egg, until fluffy. Sift in flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. Mix well. Form into two inch balls. Roll in sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet two inches apart. Bake for 10 minutes. Cool slightly and remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.
