The Clay Buchholz Foundation was created by Red Sox pitcher, Clay, and his wife, Lindsay, to provide health, educational and sports opportunities to improve the lives of children in need.  The Foundation has three major initiatives – providing resources and support for children and families facing cancer, life-threatening illness/injuries and autism. Lindsay and Clay give their time and energy to these causes of the foundation daily.

In addition to being a spouse in sports and a Mother of two young girls, Lindsay Buchholz is an accomplished model, actress, television host and long-time philanthropist.  She brings incredible passion, endless energy and a dynamic personality to anything she does in life, especially her work for the Foundation.  “Lindsay is the driving force behind the Foundation and is personally involved with every detail. Her endless energy and enthusiasm make her an ideal Foundation Founder/Director and overall amazing fundraising genius”, says the Foundation staff.

One of the charities supported by the Buchholz Foundation is Christopher’s Haven, an organization that provides housing for the families of children being treated with cancer at MassGeneral.  While the foundation provides funding, Lindsay is also actively involved with the children and families at Christopher’s Haven.  Recently, she met a little girl going through cancer treatment who wanted something to cover her head after losing all of her hair.  Lindsay was touched, so she went home and knit a hat that she brought back the next day for her (pictured below).

The Clay Buchholz Foundation recently established a unique collaboration with Binkeez for Comfort, a 501(c)(3) organization, in the Spring of 2014 with the creation of a Clay Buchholz Foundation blanket (blanket with baseball fabric) and a Lindsay Binkeez (blanket with hearts and pink fabric). A “binkeez” is more than a blanket; it is a source of comfort for children facing a life-threatening diseases and illnesses.  Through this program, Binkeez are distributed at hospitals and medical centers throughout the country.  The Clay Buchholz Foundation and Binkeez for Comfort will gift forward these blankets to the bravest of lives #StrikingOutKidsCancer and other children in need.

The most recent cause that has been added to the Foundation mission is autism.  Lindsay’s nephew was recently diagnosed with autism, thus, they are beginning to work to find ways to make a difference for children with autism.

Lindsay and Clay work hard to raise money that can be passed along as grants to organizations that fall in line with their Foundation mission.  Their flagship fundraiser is the annual Buchholz Bowl through which they have raised over $500,000.  Last season, the Foundation awarded grants to Pitching in for Kids and Christopher’s Haven (mentioned above).  They maintain close ties with these organizations.  In fact, Lindsay was recently presented with the Christopher’s Haven Leadership Award for her work with the organization.

“Lindsay and I are honored to be able to give back to the communities that have been so supportive of us. We are especially proud to support programs that help critically-ill children.” ~ Clay Buchholz.

Spouses in Sports is proud to call Lindsay one of our SiSters, and congratulates the Clay Buchholz Foundation on all they have done, and continue to do, for children in need.
