The Shane Victorino Foundation (SVF) was established in 2010 by MLB All-Star Shane Victorino, and his wife, Melissa, with the mission of promoting opportunities for underserved youth. SVF engages in projects which provide children in need with educational, recreational and wellness programs.
Shane and Melissa are actively involved in the Foundation’s fundraising and events and find importance in giving back to the communities in which they have lived and played baseball….
Philadelphia: The Shane Victorino Foundation’s signature project is the “Shane Victorino Nicetown Boys & Girls Club,” located in an impoverished area of Philadelphia and one of only a handful of clubs named in honor of an MLB player. SVF contributed nearly $1 million toward updating the century-old facility, which was in dire need of repair.
Boston: The Foundation hosts the Flyin’ Hawaiian All-Stars charity ticket program, by which local children’s groups are treated to an unforgettable day at the ballpark (pictured above). In 2013, close to 150 children from Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, Boy Scouts, Jr. RBI League, Best Buddies and other organizations participated in this program.
Hawaii: In Shane’s native state, SVF is helping to provide educational and recreational programs, including after-school tutoring and mentoring for at-risk youth, among other much-needed resources. Earlier this year, the Foundation dedicated the opening of a batting cage at Waipio Neighborhood Park and awarded the first scholarships from the Shane Victorino Foundation Tuition Assistance Fund at St. Anthony School (Shane’s alma mater). On November 26, 2013, SVF hosted the 2nd annual Youth Baseball Clinic, a free half-day event for underserved youth. Approximately 175 kids received on-field instruction from coaches, dinner and a gift bag. Shane also spoke to them about studying hard and working to reach their goals. The Foundation’s long-term goal is to renovate youth baseball fields throughout Hawaii.
Las Vegas: The Shane Victorino Foundation hosts an annual toy drive and kids holiday party for children facing homelessness, poverty and other crisis. SVF has also supported organizations in the area such as the Discovery Children’s Museum, HELP of S. Nevada, Catholic Charities, The Shade Tree women’s and children’s shelter, and more.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to the communities that have given so much to me. Over the past years, Melissa and I have lent our support to a number of great organizations. However, we wanted to make an even bigger impact by starting a foundation focused on changing the lives of children in need.” -Shane Victorino
