As the NFL season is newly underway, it dawned on me while watching games from around the league this weekend just how important Spouses in Sports can be to the wives and partners of professional athletes. As a group we share camaraderie and as individuals we share the knowledge and wisdom that comes from being a “seasoned” veteran of the league.
While our lifestyles may seem like all “fun and games” to those who only imagine what it’s like living with a husband or partner who is a professional athlete, we all know that there are many, many times where the isolation of being a spouse in sports can be overwhelming. After seeing Malcom Floyd being carted off the field during the San Diego Chargers vs Philadelphia Eagles game yesterday with what appeared to be a serious injury, my first instinct was to pray for his safety and wellbeing. My second instinct was to reach out to his family: his wife, parents, girlfriend, siblings who may have been watching helplessly in the stadium, or at home on TV.
Too often we watch as players are carted off the field, however we fully understand that they are not just players. They are husbands, sons, brothers, boyfriends, cousins and those we love – not just a number and team logo for most to watch. This is a big reason why I launched Spouses in Sports. We are a community of understanding and knowing women – a SiSterhood where we
can speak our mind, our fears, our frustrations, our joys and our unique situations and dilemmas that come with being a wife or family member of a professional athlete.
Our purpose is to be here for each other and our mission is to assist with friendship, resources and a group of knowing individuals. I encourage you to take a moment this week and spend some time on our site (www.spousesinsports.com), knowing that we welcome your involvement and friendship. If you would like to reach out to me direct, you may always do so.
I hope you’ll join us!
